Sustainability & Community Impact: Our ‘Tri Hita Karana’ Commitment

In Balinese philosophy, ‘Tri Hita Karana’ describes the three causes of well-being: harmony with God, harmony among people, and harmony with nature. This philosophy is the guiding principle of our sustainability and community impact strategy. At Northbalitravel Co., a member of the Juara Holding Group, we believe that luxury travel is only truly luxurious when it positively contributes to the destination and its people. Our commitment goes beyond mere compliance; it is a proactive effort to preserve and enrich the cultural and natural heritage of North Bali for generations to come.

Environmental Stewardship: Harmony with Nature

We are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint and actively participating in the conservation of North Bali’s pristine ecosystems.

  • Carbon Offsetting Program: We calculate the carbon footprint of each journey we create, from flights to ground transportation. We then invest in verified carbon offset projects, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Kalimantan, to ensure every trip is carbon-neutral.
  • Marine Conservation Partnership: A portion of our revenue from all snorkeling and diving activities at Menjangan Island is donated directly to the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) to support their coral reef restoration and coastal conservation programs in West Bali National Park.
  • Strict No Single-Use Plastic Policy: We have a zero-tolerance policy for single-use plastics on all our tours. We provide clients with reusable water bottles and work only with partners who share this commitment, from hotels to boat operators.
  • Reforestation Initiatives: In partnership with local communities in Munduk and Kayuputih, we fund and participate in the planting of native trees, helping to restore the watershed and create corridors for local wildlife.

Community Empowerment: Harmony Among People

Our business model is designed to create tangible, lasting benefits for the local communities we operate in.

  • Hyper-Local Employment: We are proud that over 90% of our on-the-ground guides, drivers, and support staff are hired from the local villages and regencies of Buleleng and Jembrana. We invest in their training and professional development, creating sustainable careers.
  • Support for Local Enterprises: We prioritize sourcing from local suppliers, from using family-owned ‘warungs’ for authentic culinary experiences to purchasing amenities from local artisans. This ensures that tourism revenue directly benefits the local economy.
  • Community Development Fund: We contribute a percentage of our annual profits to a dedicated fund managed in partnership with local ‘banjar’ (community councils). These funds have supported projects such as improving irrigation for ‘subak’ systems, providing school supplies for children in Pemuteran, and funding waste management infrastructure.
  • Preservation of Cultural Heritage: We facilitate authentic, respectful cultural experiences that support the preservation of traditions. This includes sponsoring local gamelan troupes, arranging private workshops with Lontar manuscript artists in Singaraja, and ensuring that a portion of the fees goes directly to the artists and community.

Our Promise of Responsible Travel

Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey, not a final destination. We continuously review our practices, as detailed in our Editorial Standards, and seek new ways to deepen our positive impact. When you travel with a North Bali travel specialist from our team, you become a partner in this mission, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for the Island of the Gods.
