North Bali Travel: Day Trips, 3D2N Loops, and 5D4N Highland-Coast Combinations

What is a North Bali Travel Itinerary?

A North Bali travel itinerary is a structured multi-day route covering the major sites of Buleleng Regency and the central Bali highlands, including Lovina dolphin coast, Munduk village, Sekumpul waterfall, Sambangan, Banjar hot springs, Pemuteran reef, and the twin lakes of Tamblingan and Buyan. We offer three core itineraries calibrated to time available, fitness level, and travel pace. All three include private air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking driver-guide, all entry fees, water, and accommodation tier options at three price points. Itineraries can be combined or extended, and we customize freely for honeymoons, photography priorities, family groups, or solo travelers. Bali tourism portal

Tour 1: Day Trip from South Bali to North Bali Highlights

The day trip is for travelers based in Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, or Sanur who want a single long day covering the photographic highlights of North Bali without changing accommodation. Pickup runs from 6am at your South Bali hotel and drop-off completes by 9pm. Total drive time is approximately seven hours of moving, broken into manageable segments. The trip works best for one or two travelers in our private sedan, or three to four in the Innova SUV. Subak (UNESCO heritage)

Day Trip Stops in Order

  • Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Bedugul): arrival around 8:30am for the morning light on the lake-floating pagoda. Forty-five minutes including walk and photos.
  • Wanagiri Hidden Hills viewpoint: the famous swing and nest platforms over the twin lakes. Twenty minutes for the view, optional swing photos available.
  • Munduk waterfall (Red Coral or Melanting): a thirty-minute walk through the clove forest to a sixty-meter cascade. Allow ninety minutes including the descent and return.
  • Munduk village lunch: traditional Balinese set meal at a family-run warung overlooking the rice terraces. One hour.
  • Banyumala Twin Waterfall: a steep but short fifteen-minute hike to twin streams falling into a turquoise pool. Allow seventy-five minutes including swim time.
  • Jatiluwih rice terrace photo stop: on the return route via Pupuan, with golden hour light hitting the UNESCO-listed terraces between 4:30pm and 5:30pm.
  • Optional dinner stop in Tabanan: Bebek Bengil duck or Babi Guling at a roadside specialist before returning south.

This itinerary skips Lovina and Sekumpul deliberately because both require accommodation in the north to do justice. If your priority is dolphins or Sekumpul, take the 3D2N tour instead.

Day Trip Pricing and Inclusions

The day trip from south Bali starts at IDR 1,650,000 for two passengers in a sedan, including driver, fuel, parking, and bottled water. All entry fees (approximately IDR 250,000 per person across all stops) are paid separately or bundled into a fixed all-inclusive price of IDR 2,200,000 for two. Lunch is not included so guests can choose their own pace, but our driver knows the best warung at every stop and recommends from a tested shortlist. Optional extras include the Wanagiri swing (IDR 100,000 per person) and a Balinese cooking demonstration in Munduk (IDR 350,000 per person, requires advance booking).

Tour 2: 3 Day 2 Night North Bali Loop

The three day two night loop is our most popular North Bali itinerary and the one we recommend for first-time visitors who have time in their Bali schedule but cannot commit a full week. The loop covers Munduk highlands, Lovina coast with dolphin morning, Sekumpul waterfall, and the cultural sites around Singaraja, with two nights of accommodation positioned to minimize driving and maximize early-morning experiences.

Day 1: South Bali to Munduk via Bedugul

Pickup at 8am from your south Bali base. Drive via Tabanan and the Bedugul highland route, with stops at Jatiluwih rice terraces, Ulun Danu Beratan temple, and the strawberry stalls at Bedugul market. Arrive Munduk in time for late lunch, with the afternoon free for the Munduk waterfall trail (Red Coral, Melanting, and Labuhan Kebo cascade in a single three-kilometer loop). Sunset at the Wanagiri ridge looking west over Tamblingan lake. Dinner and overnight in Munduk village.

Day 2: Munduk to Lovina via Sekumpul

Early start at 6:30am for the cool morning hike to the twin lakes view from the Tamblingan ridge. Return for breakfast, then drive north through the coffee and clove plantations to Sekumpul waterfall. The Sekumpul hike is the highlight of the trip for many guests, a forty-minute descent through plantations to a viewpoint over seven tiered cascades, with optional river crossing to the base of the main fall (allow three hours total including the climb back up). Late lunch in Singaraja, then continue to Lovina for sunset on the black sand beach. Dinner of grilled local seafood at Warung Bambu or Damai. Overnight in Lovina.

Day 3: Lovina Dolphins to South Bali

Dawn departure at 5:30am for the dolphin boat from Kalibukbuk pier. Two hours on the water with a high probability (we estimate ninety percent based on the past three years of guest data) of seeing wild dolphin pods. Return for breakfast at the hotel, optional snorkeling at the Lovina coral garden, then check out by 11am. Drive south via Banjar Buddhist monastery (Brahmavihara-Arama) and the Banjar hot springs. Lunch in Munduk, then continue south, arriving your South Bali hotel by 6pm.

3D2N Pricing and Accommodation Tiers

  • Comfort tier: from IDR 5,800,000 per person twin share. Munduk Moding Plantation or Puri Lumbung Cottages, Lovina Beach Club or Sunari Resort.
  • Boutique tier: from IDR 8,200,000 per person twin share. Sanak Retreat Bali or Munduk Wildflower, The Damai Lovina Villas.
  • Luxury tier: from IDR 12,400,000 per person twin share. Munduk Moding Plantation suite, The Lovina Resort Buleleng pool villa.

All tiers include private vehicle and driver-guide for three days, all listed accommodation with breakfast, dolphin boat charter, all entry fees and parking, and bottled water throughout. International flights, lunches, dinners not specified, alcohol, spa treatments, and personal expenses are excluded.

Tour 3: 5 Day 4 Night Highlands and Coast

The five day four night itinerary is the comprehensive North Bali experience. Designed for travelers who want depth rather than highlights, this tour spends two nights in Munduk, two nights in Pemuteran on the far western coast, and a final night in Lovina with the dolphin sunrise built into the last morning. Total moving time across five days is approximately fourteen hours, broken into two-hour driving segments with substantial time at each location.

Day 1: Arrival and Munduk Settle-In

Pickup from south Bali or airport. Scenic route via Jatiluwih and Bedugul. Late lunch at the Munduk Cafe overlooking the valley. Afternoon village walk with our local guide Wayan, including a coffee plantation visit and traditional Balinese rice grinding demonstration. Sunset cocktail at Made’s Warung overlooking Tamblingan lake. Overnight Munduk.

Day 2: Munduk Deep Dive with Cooking Class

Morning hike at 6am to the Tamblingan twin lakes ridge for sunrise. Return for breakfast. Mid-morning at Banyumala Twin Waterfall with swim time. Afternoon Balinese cooking class at Don Biyu (we shop for ingredients at the Pancasari market first, then cook five traditional dishes including base genep paste, lawar, and grilled fish in banana leaf). Dinner is the meal you cooked. Overnight Munduk.

Day 3: Munduk to Pemuteran via Sekumpul and Banjar

Check out 9am. Sekumpul waterfall hike (the full version with river crossing to the base of the main fall, three hours). Lunch in Singaraja old port. Afternoon stop at Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist monastery and Banjar hot springs. Continue west along the coast to Pemuteran, arriving by 5pm. Sunset at the beach. Overnight Pemuteran.

Day 4: Menjangan Island Snorkeling and Pemuteran Reef

Boat charter from Pemuteran to Menjangan Island for full day snorkeling. Two snorkel sessions on the wall reef and the temple anchor site, with lunch on the boat or at the ranger station. Return to Pemuteran by 4pm. Optional afternoon at the Reef Seen turtle hatchery and the Biorock coral restoration project (we strongly recommend this, the Biorock project is one of the longest-running coral restoration efforts in Asia). Sunset and dinner at Taman Sari Beach Resort. Overnight Pemuteran.

Day 5: Pemuteran to Lovina to South Bali

Drive east along the north coast to Lovina, arriving by 11am. Late check-in at Lovina hotel, lunch, and afternoon free for snorkeling at the Lovina coral garden, beach time, or massage at Araminth Spa. Pre-dinner sunset at the Lovina dolphin statue (yes, it is a tourist photo, but the angle of the sunset hitting the dolphin sculptures is genuinely good). Dinner at the hotel. Overnight Lovina.

Day 6 morning: dolphin boat at 5:30am, breakfast, check out, drive south, arrive south Bali or airport by 2pm. Note that day 6 is a half-day extension; the headline is 5D4N but we always include the dolphin morning as a complimentary closer because Lovina without the dawn dolphin is a missed experience.

5D4N Pricing and Accommodation Tiers

  • Comfort tier: from IDR 12,400,000 per person twin share.
  • Boutique tier: from IDR 17,800,000 per person twin share.
  • Luxury tier: from IDR 26,500,000 per person twin share.

Includes all transfers, four nights accommodation with breakfast, Menjangan boat charter with two-tank snorkel gear, cooking class at Don Biyu, all entry fees, dolphin boat, English-speaking guide-driver throughout, and bottled water. Excludes international flights, lunches and dinners not specified, alcohol, scuba diving (available as add-on), and personal expenses.

Custom and Combination Itineraries

Roughly forty percent of our bookings end up as custom builds rather than the standard three. Common requests include: adding Mount Batur sunrise hike from the Munduk base, swapping Pemuteran for Amed on the east coast, extending Munduk by two nights for a writers retreat or yoga focus, combining North Bali with the Komodo liveaboard departing from Labuan Bajo, or adding a private temple ceremony with a local pemangku. Tell us what you want, we build it.

For background on which sites suit which traveler type, see the twenty-five best things to do in North Bali. For Munduk-only travelers, the three day Munduk itinerary goes deeper than the version included here.

Booking Process and Payment

Inquire by email or WhatsApp with your travel dates, group size, accommodation tier preference, and any priorities or restrictions. We respond within twelve hours with a tailored proposal including the exact hotels available for your dates. Once you confirm, we hold rooms with a thirty percent deposit by international wire or credit card. Final balance is due fourteen days before arrival. Cancellations more than thirty days out receive a full refund minus three percent processing. Travel insurance is your responsibility and we recommend World Nomads or SafetyWing for medical coverage in remote North Bali areas.
